Glossary

Cast stretchfilm

The most common type of stretchfilm. Thickness, formulation and quality can determine its stretchability level up to 400%.

Se.co.pack can provide cast multy layer and nanolayer machine stretchfilms, for a good load stability of palletized units.

Blown stretchfilm

Its containment force protects, unitizes and stabilizes also the heavier palletized loads.

Se.co.pack can provide both blown pre-stretched stretchfilms (handreels and machine reels), and machine stretchfilms with a stretchability level up to 400%.

Pre-stretched stretchfilm – Strechfilm for machines with a pre-stretch unit

Pre-stretched film is stretched during the production process, reducing plastic thickness while improving its containment force. Pre-stretched film can be utilized for hand application or on wrapping machines equipped with a brake/friction unit.

The thickness of stretchfilm for machines with a pre-stretch unit is reduced during application on palletized unit, as the stretchfilm is stretched between two or more rolls placed in the machine carriage (pre-stretch unit).

The reduction of thickness (downgauging) is a simple method to reduce the quantity of plastic and get a lightweight packaging.

Se.co.pack provides only low thickness stretchfilm (both pre-stretched and for pre-stretch).

Thickness

Strechfilm thickness is measured in µm. 23 µm is still the most common thickness in the market.

Thickness is inversely proportional to yeld x kg: the higher is thickness, the shorter the linear lenght of 1 kg of stretchfilm and its yeld x kg.

Se.co.pack range includes both pre-stretched films from 6 µm to 12 µm and strechfilm for pre-stretch wrapping machines from 8 µm to 17 µm.

Cling and slip

Higher quality stretchfilms have one slippery side and one cling side.

During application, the cling side is placed inside to unitize the load in a homogeneous unit. The outer side, the slip side, prevents packaged pallet units from sticking together.

Se.co.pack range includes stretchfilm with a cling side and a slippery side.

Recyclable

Stretchfilm is PE LD and the recycle symbol is [Picture 1]

After use it is 100% recyclable.

Recycle gives value to waste, which becomes a resource.

Se.co.pack collect and recycle all byproducts and scraps from its production department.

Recycled

Strechfilm can be produced with a quote of recycled raw materials, replacing virgin fossil materials during plastic extrusion.

Plastic waste properly recycled becomes a secondary raw materials, reducing both waste and new virgin fossil raw materials.

Recycled raw materials can be divided into two categories: Post Consumer Recycled or P.C.R (post-consumer waste collected) and Post Industrial Recycled or P.I.R (scraps from industrial production process). Both P.C.R and P.I.R traceability must be certified by third and independent certification bodies.

Se.co.pack P.C.R handstretch and machine stretch are certified.

Reach

REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. REACH applies to all chemical substances used in industrial processes to produce any kind of products.

To comply with the regulation, companies must identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market in the EU.

REACH establishes procedures for collecting and assessing information on the properties and hazards of substances.

Companies need to register their substances. ECHA receives and evaluates individual registrations for their compliance. Authorities can ban hazardous substances if their risks are unmanageable.

The Importer from outside the EU, have same responsibilities under REACH than a producer.

Se.co.pack can send, upon request, a Reach statement for each stretchfilm.

EU 2014/47 Eumos directive

The European Directive 2014/47 aims to prevent accident during tranport of palletized products.

EUMOS 40509 test method verify the stability of palletized loads.

This is a crucial issue for safety of operators involved in loading, unloading and handling of palletized units.

Load stability is determined by the containment force of stretchfilm on palletized products.

Se.co.pack can check the containment force of stretchfilm during wrapping tests in customers’ plant, using a portable device measuring film edge force.

Yield per kg

The yield per kg is the number of palletized units wrapped with 1 kg (net weight) of stretchfilm.

The yield per kg is inversely proportional to stretchfilm thickness.

Se.co.pack can calculate and demonstrate the yield per kg of stretchfilm during wrapping tests in customers’ plant.

Packaging weight

The packaging weight is the quantity of stretchfilm wrapped on a palletized unit.

In order to improve sustainability the packaging must be as much as possible lightweighting, without compromising its primary function: product containment and protection.

The thinner is stretchfilm, the lighter is the packaging of each palletized unit: 1 kg of plastic will wrap a greater number of palletized units, reducing environmental impact and costs.

Se.co.pack verifies and records packaging weight during wrapping tests in customers’ plant.

Packaging process

The packaging process is related to the wrapping method of a pallet unit, involving:

. wrapping patterns: simple wrapping (revolutions upward), crossed wrapping (revolutions upward & downward); supplementary revolutions at bottom and/or top of the pallet

. • selected pre-stretch %: stretchfilm is prestretched during the wrapping cycle

. carriage speed is selected during upward and downward wrapping, determining the quantity of revolutions around the palletized load.

Define a packaging process is necessary to wrap all the palletized units in the same way.

Se.co.pack define together with the customer the most suitable wrapping process to guarantee safe loads and an efficient use of stretchfilm.

Containment force

Stretchfilm force unitize the palletized load, avoiding products loss during the transport.

The containment force must be carefully controlled to avoid deformation of the boxes.

Se.co.pack can check the containment force of stretchfilm during wrapping tests in customers’ plant, using a portable device measuring film edge force.
